When the hills are dazzling white with their snowy blanket, they are one of the most incredible places to be and incredibly inviting to visit, but to explore them safely it’s vital to have the right winter skills.

The 2-day Intro To Winter Walking Skills course is designed to give you a good understanding of the core skills you need when heading into the mountains in winter. Building on your existing summer walking experience we will add on new techniques, equipment and ideas to give you a range of skills to be able to start to tackle Scotlands winter skyline.

It could be your first time venturing above the snowline, or a refresher to make sure your existing skills are up to scratch; our instructors aim to give you the confidence and knowledge to make progress and take decisions in the hills with safety and confidence.

Each winter we select course locations to give the best chance of good snow conditions as the season progresses, and can often add extra courses in different areas when the snow cover is good enough lower down.

During the course we plan to cover;

  • Weather & avalanche forecasts
  • Choosing the right equipment
  • Fitting & walking with crampons
  • Using the ice axe
  • Walking on steep ground
  • Ice axe arrests (stopping a slide)
  • Navigation in snow
  • Evaluating the snow pack & avalanche awareness

The Scottish winter can be very unpredictable in both the short and long term weather and seasonal conditions, but we always aim to make the most out of what mother nature throws at us so that you can get the most out of the course!

To ensure you get the most out of your activity, we ask that participants meet some minimum abilities.

  • Reasonable summer walking experience.
