The 3 Star award is the first of the disciple specific Star awards. The 3 Star Sea Kayak award shows that you are an intermediate paddler, able to demonstrate personal competence paddling in wind conditions of no more than Beaufort Force 3 or Sea State 3 as part of a led group.

During the two day course, you will spend time on both flat and choppy open water, covering the skills required to paddle confidently in each. New skills and theories will be introduced for the water conditions while continuing to refine skills developed in previous star Awards.

New techniques covered include; planning your journey and reading understanding tidal currents, paddling with, against and across the waves, using the wind and tides to aid you on open water recommend, navigating over on wide open water, and carrying out rescues and tows in deep water.

Being able to complete a roll is a requirement of the assessment. It is a good idea to have had some rolling practice before attending the course, but there will be a coached opportunity to complete the roll within the course, so it does not need to be perfect yet.

You may use the experience logged during the training element of the course towards the required experience for assessment. See the Prerequisite section of this page, or the course Syllabus for further information.

The course Syllabus is available from the British Canoeing or Canoe Scotland websites. Certification fees are not included in the price, which are currently £12 for BC/SCA members and £25 for non-members.

To ensure you get the most out of your activity, we ask that participants meet some minimum abilities.

  • BC 2 Star equivalent skills are required. While you do not need to have completed the 2 Star award, it is recommended to ensure you are at the required standard.
  • The ability to swim confidently in the sea environment, wearing normal paddling clothes.
  • Have completed at least three different journeys on the sea, of about 3 hours duration (8nm) each.
